Disney’s Pop Century Resort: What First-Time Guests Should Know Before Booking

If you’re planning your first Walt Disney World vacation, choosing a hotel can cause some serious planning anxiety.

Do you spend more for a Moderate Resort?

Stay off-property and save money?

Choose the cheapest Disney hotel you can find?

Or pay a little more for something that makes getting to the parks easier?

That’s exactly why Disney’s Pop Century Resort remains such an interesting choice.

It’s officially a Disney Value Resort, but its biggest transportation perk makes it feel considerably more convenient than a typical budget hotel.

Disney's Pop Century Resort Larger Than Life Yo-Yo

And this year there’s another reason to take a fresh look at Pop Century.

Disney has been refreshing the resort.

The rooms, lobby, Everything POP Shopping & Dining and Petals Pool Bar have all received attention, giving one of Disney World’s most popular Value Resorts a noticeably updated feel. Disney is still advising guests that construction and refurbishment are underway, however, so that’s something you’ll want to keep in mind before booking.

So is Pop Century still one of the smartest places to stay at Walt Disney World?

For a lot of families, I think it is.

But there are a few situations where I’d spend the extra money and stay somewhere else.

What’s New at Pop Century?

Disney revealed the resort’s refreshed rooms and lobby earlier this year.

The new lobby incorporates bold artwork inspired by pop culture from the 1950s through the 1990s, along with Disney’s Fab Five. Disney also reconfigured portions of the lobby to create more seating, including communal tables where guests can relax, recharge devices or get a little work done.

The guest rooms have also been refreshed with a brighter look, updated curtains and upholstery, wood-toned flooring and subtle Disney details, including Hidden Mickeys.

Everything POP Shopping & Dining received earlier updates as well, including refreshed dining and shopping spaces and a new coffee shop.

One caveat matters for anyone booking right now: Disney’s current Pop Century pages still state that the resort is undergoing construction and refurbishment.

That wouldn’t automatically stop me from staying there, but it is something first-time visitors should know rather than discover after check-in.

Disney's Pop Century Resort Skyliner Station

The Real Reason I Recommend Pop Century: The Skyliner

Let’s get to Pop Century’s biggest advantage.

It’s not the giant yo-yos.

It’s not the pools.

It’s not even the price.

It’s the Disney Skyliner.

The gondola system connects Pop Century with EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios via the Caribbean Beach hub. Disney currently lists Pop Century, Caribbean Beach, Riviera and Art of Animation as Skyliner resorts.

For me, this changes the entire value proposition.

If you’re staying at a Disney Value Resort without Skyliner access, you’re much more dependent on buses.

At Pop Century, two of your four theme-park destinations have another transportation option.

And riding above Walt Disney World in a gondola is considerably more pleasant than standing on a crowded bus at the end of a long park day.

International Gateway entrance area to EPCOT by boat

Pop Century Is Especially Good for EPCOT Trips

With the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival beginning August 27, 2026, Pop Century becomes particularly attractive for late-summer and fall vacations.

Instead of taking a bus to EPCOT’s main entrance, Skyliner guests arrive near International Gateway, putting you directly into the World Showcase side of the park.

That’s incredibly convenient on a Food & Wine day.

You can spend the morning riding attractions, sample festival dishes around lunch, take the Skyliner back to Pop Century for an afternoon break, and return for World Showcase and evening entertainment.

That ability to leave EPCOT without feeling like you’re undertaking a transportation expedition is one of Pop Century’s most underrated advantages.

Disney's Hollywood Studios Entrance

Hollywood Studios Is Equally Convenient

The same logic applies to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

You can take the Skyliner toward Hollywood Studios, making it much easier to return to your room for an afternoon break.

For families with small children, that can matter more than a fancy hotel lobby.

A Walt Disney World vacation often looks different in reality than it does on a spreadsheet.

By 2:00 PM, someone is tired.

Someone wants the pool.

Someone needs dry shoes.

And someone desperately needs a nap.

A resort that makes leaving and returning to the park relatively painless can be worth paying a little more for.

Disney's Pop Century Resort Groovy Pool

The Rooms Are Small, but They’re Clever

Let’s set expectations appropriately.

Pop Century is still a Value Resort.

You’re not getting the sprawling room or extensive amenities you’d expect from a Deluxe Resort.

Disney’s current room configurations generally sleep up to four adults and feature either a king bed or a queen bed plus a queen-size pull-down bed, depending on room type.

That pull-down bed is one reason the rooms work surprisingly well.

When it’s folded away, you regain useful floor space and a table.

At night, pull it down and you’ve got the second sleeping surface.

For two adults or a small family, I think the layout works well.

For four adults sharing one room for a week?

I’d think much more carefully.

Standard or Preferred Room: Is Preferred Worth It?

This is one upgrade I’d evaluate based on your particular trip.

Disney describes Preferred Rooms as being closer to Classic Hall, dining, shopping and transportation.

That may sound like a minor convenience when you’re booking from your couch.

It doesn’t necessarily feel minor after walking 20,000 steps around EPCOT.

If your budget allows it, and particularly if you’re traveling with young children, older adults or someone who tires easily, I would at least price the difference.

But I wouldn’t sacrifice an important vacation experience just to upgrade from Standard to Preferred.

Pop Century isn’t enormous enough that I’d consider a Standard Room a deal-breaker.

Disney's Pop Century Resort Pool and Pool Bar

The Pools Are Fun, but This Isn’t a Pool-Resort Vacation

Pop Century’s main pool is the Hippy Dippy Pool, themed around the 1960s and featuring flower-shaped water jets.

Kids can have a great time here.

But this is where the distinction between Disney’s resort categories becomes noticeable.

If your vacation plan includes multiple resort days where you want the hotel itself to provide a major portion of the entertainment, I’d consider a Moderate or Deluxe Resort.

If your plan is:

Parks โ†’ shower โ†’ sleep โ†’ parks again

Pop Century makes considerably more sense.

Don’t pay for resort amenities you’re not actually going to use.

Pop Century Bus Stop

The Disney Resort Benefits Still Matter

Staying at Pop Century also means you’re staying at a Disney Resort hotel.

Currently, Resort hotel guests continue to receive perks including 30 minutes of Early Theme Park Entry every day at every park, complimentary Disney transportation and free standard parking at Disney hotels, theme parks and water parks.

And there’s another 2026 perk families should know about: children ages 3โ€“9 can receive a free dining plan when the other qualifying members of the party purchase a dining plan as part of an eligible Disney Resort package.

Those perks don’t automatically make an on-property hotel cheaper than staying elsewhere.

But they belong in the comparison.

All Star Sports Football Field Themed Rooms

Pop Century vs. All-Star Sports: Is the Skyliner Worth Paying More For?

This is the comparison I’d expect a lot of budget-conscious first-time visitors to make.

Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort can sometimes be cheaper.

So should you simply book whichever Value Resort costs less?

Not necessarily.

If the difference is relatively small, I’d usually pay more for Pop Century because of the Skyliner.

You’re not really paying for a nicer category of hotel.

You’re paying for transportation convenience.

But if All-Star Sports is dramatically cheaper and you’re planning very little EPCOT or Hollywood Studios time, I’d happily take the savings.

Caribbean Beach Resort Boat Docks

Pop Century vs. Caribbean Beach: When I’d Upgrade

The more difficult decision is Pop Century versus Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort.

Both are on the Skyliner.

But Caribbean Beach is a Moderate Resort and also serves as the system’s central transfer hub.

I’d lean toward Caribbean Beach when:

  • You plan to spend meaningful time relaxing at the resort.
  • A more immersive tropical atmosphere matters to you.
  • You want more substantial resort dining.
  • You prefer Moderate Resort amenities.
  • The price difference is manageable.

I’d choose Pop Century when:

  • Parks are the overwhelming priority.
  • You’re trying to control hotel costs.
  • You still want Skyliner access.
  • You’re comfortable with a smaller room.
  • You mainly need a clean, convenient place to sleep.

This is exactly why I don’t believe there’s one “best” Disney resort.

There’s a best resort for the way you’re actually going to vacation.

One Future Date Skyliner Guests Should Put on Their Calendar

Disney has already announced its next Skyliner refurbishment.

The system is scheduled to close January 24 through January 30, 2027, with complimentary bus transportation available during the closure.

If I were paying a premium specifically to stay at Pop Century for Skyliner access during those dates, I’d reconsider whether the resort still represented the same value.

Who Should Stay at Pop Century?

I’d put Pop Century near the top of the list for:

First-time visitors who want to stay on Disney property without paying Moderate prices.

Families spending most of their vacation in the parks.

Guests planning significant time at EPCOT and Hollywood Studios.

Food & Wine Festival visitors who want convenient access to International Gateway.

Couples who want Disney transportation and theming without paying for amenities they won’t use.

It can also be an excellent “split stay” resort. Spend several park-heavy nights at Pop Century and move to a more elaborate resort for the relaxing portion of the vacation.

Who Should Skip Pop Century?

I’d look elsewhere if:

You’re planning several resort days.

A Moderate or Deluxe Resort may give you considerably more to enjoy without leaving the property.

Four adults will share one room for an extended stay.

Possible? Yes.

My idea of relaxing? Not particularly.

You want upscale dining and resort atmosphere.

Pop Century isn’t pretending to be the Polynesian.

You strongly dislike gondolas.

If you’re not going to use the Skyliner, one of Pop Century’s biggest competitive advantages disappears.

Pop Century Resort Near Bus Stop

Final Verdict: Is Pop Century A Good Value Option?

For the right visitor, absolutely.

Pop Century occupies an unusual sweet spot.

You get Value Resort pricing and Value Resort rooms, but transportation that can make two major park days noticeably easier.

The refreshed spaces make the resort more appealing in 2026, while the Skyliner remains the reason I’d choose it over many similarly priced options.

Just understand what you’re buying.

Pop Century isn’t the resort I’d choose for a luxurious Disney retreat.

It’s the resort I’d choose when I want to spend my money doing Disney rather than sleeping at Disney, without giving up the convenience of staying inside Walt Disney World.

And for many first-time visitors?

That’s exactly the right trade-off.
